CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Berkmar Drive Extension and Route 29 Widening projects are complete, almost three and a half months ahead of schedule and under budget. The Virginia Department of Transportation gave both projects final approval today.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced the opening of the last two Route 29 Solutions design-build projects during an event Thursday morning in Albemarle County.
“The Route 29 Solutions program was among the first initiatives put in motion by my administration,” said Governor McAuliffe. “We promised that these projects would address the long-standing safety issues and congestion along Route 29 in the Charlottesville region, and it’s a pleasure to celebrate the successful completion of the three most challenging projects in that package of transportation improvements with the Charlottesville community.”

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Three lanes are open in each direction on Route 29 between Polo Grounds Road and Towncenter Drive in Albemarle County. The additional lane opened early this morning after final paving and line-striping was completed overnight.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Berkmar Drive extension between Hilton Heights Road and Towncenter Drive opened to traffic this afternoon. The 2.2-mile-long road has sidewalks, bike lanes and a 10-foot-wide, paved shared-use path along its entire length. The road provides an alternate route for traffic traveling north and south along the Route 29 corridor and an additional crossing of the South Fork Rivanna River.

The final phase of construction of the roundabout at Hilton Heights Road and Berkmar Drive will begin on Friday night with demolition of the existing pavement at the intersection. During that work Friday night Berkmar Drive will be closed at Woodbrook Drive and Hilton Heights Road will be closed just west of the entrances to Walmart and the Doubletree Charlottesville Hotel.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Beginning tonight there will be overnight lane closures on Route 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 631 (Rio Road) in the vicinity of the new grade-separated intersection. The closures will allow the contractor to finish work, including installing lighting and sealing and staining the retaining walls, that was not required to be complete prior to opening the intersection to traffic.

Lane-Corman, the Route 29 Solutions Construction Contractor regrets the incident that occurred early Monday morning (March 7th) when a communications cable belonging to CenturyLink was damaged and communication in a large part of northern Albemarle County was disrupted. Lane-Corman has identified what the reason was for the damage that occurred and has taken steps to preclude this type of error in the future.

The work, which will be done at night, uses a compressed air-driven hammer to drill the tie-back anchors into the soil behind the pilings.
