Rt. 29 Widening, Berkmar Dr. Extended Projects Are Complete; VDOT Issues Final Acceptance

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Berkmar Drive Extension and Route 29 Widening projects are complete, almost three and a half months ahead of schedule and under budget. The Virginia Department of Transportation gave both projects final approval today.

Governor McAuliffe Announces Opening of Two Route 29 Solutions Projects

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced the opening of the last two Route 29 Solutions design-build projects during an event Thursday morning in Albemarle County.  

“The Route 29 Solutions program was among the first initiatives put in motion by my administration,” said Governor McAuliffe. “We promised that these projects would address the long-standing safety issues and congestion along Route 29 in the Charlottesville region, and it’s a pleasure to celebrate the successful completion of the three most challenging projects in that package of transportation improvements with the Charlottesville community.”

Third Lane Open to Traffic on Rt. 29 Widening Project

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Three lanes are open in each direction on Route 29 between Polo Grounds Road and Towncenter Drive in Albemarle County. The additional lane opened early this morning after final paving and line-striping was completed overnight.

Berkmar Drive Extension is Open to Traffic

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Berkmar Drive extension between Hilton Heights Road and Towncenter Drive opened to traffic this afternoon. The 2.2-mile-long road has sidewalks, bike lanes and a 10-foot-wide, paved shared-use path along its entire length. The road provides an alternate route for traffic traveling north and south along the Route 29 corridor and an additional crossing of the South Fork Rivanna River.

Berkmar Dr., Hilton Heights Rd. Intersection Closed Friday Night; Use Rt. 29 as Alternate Route

The final phase of construction of the roundabout at Hilton Heights Road and Berkmar Drive will begin on Friday night with demolition of the existing pavement at the intersection. During that work Friday night Berkmar Drive will be closed at Woodbrook Drive and Hilton Heights Road will be closed just west of the entrances to Walmart and the Doubletree Charlottesville Hotel.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Route 29 Solutions advisory panels will welcome Craig Eddy as the new facilitator beginning with the Hydraulic Planning Advisory Panel’s meeting on Thursday. CHARLOTTESVILLE — The closure of the entrance to Forest Lakes South at Ashwood Boulevard has been postponed one day and will now occur overnight Wednesday.  During the closure, between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday, detour signs will direct traffic to North Hollymead Drive, where drivers will be routed back to Ashwood Boulevard. Traffic using Ashwood Boulevard to leave Forest Lakes will also be detoured to North Hollymead Drive.

Home for the Holidays? Remind Out-of-Town Visitors of Reduced Speed Limit, Shoulder Closures in Rt. 29 Widening Work Zone

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Traffic restrictions on Route 29 between Polo Grounds Road and Hollymead Town Center will remain in effect over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Residents with family or friends visiting are urged to remind them that the speed limit on the 1.8-mile segment of highway is 40 miles per hour at all times and the roadway shoulders are closed along sections of the project.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Construction work on the Berkmar Drive bridge over the South Fork Rivanna River will require all-day closures of Rio Mills Road on Monday and Tuesday while concrete is being poured for the deck surface. Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. the road will be closed from the Route 29 intersection west to Millers Cottage Lane. The residential properties and businesses along the north end of Rio Mills Road will still be accessible from Earlysville Road.

Overnight Closures Will Resume at Rt. 29-Rio Rd. Intersection Project

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Beginning tonight there will be overnight lane closures on Route 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 631 (Rio Road) in the vicinity of the new grade-separated intersection. The closures will allow the contractor to finish work, including installing lighting and sealing and staining the retaining walls, that was not required to be complete prior to opening the intersection to traffic.

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- The City of Charlottesville will host an open forum citizen informational meeting for the Hillsdale Drive Extension project on June 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Senior Center, 1180 Pepsi Place.

The public is invited to attend this meeting to view the schedule and plans for the upcoming construction project as well as provide an opportunity to sign up for traffic updates. Lane-Corman Statement on March 7 Damage to CenturyLink Communications Cable

Lane-Corman, the Route 29 Solutions Construction Contractor regrets the incident that occurred early Monday morning (March 7th) when a communications cable belonging to CenturyLink was damaged and communication in a large part of northern Albemarle County was disrupted.  Lane-Corman has identified what the reason was for the damage that occurred and has taken steps to preclude this type of error in the future.

CHARLOTTESVILLE (10 a.m.) — Service has been restored to all CenturyLink customers in the Charlottesville region who were affected by yesterday’s outage. Service was interrupted after a construction crew working on the Route 29-Rio Road grade-separated intersection project damaged an underground cable that carries telephone and data for CenturyLink customers.

CENTURYLINK REPAIRING DAMAGED CABLE AT RIO PROJECT

CHARLOTTESVILLE (4:30 p.m.) — Repair crews from CenturyLink are working to repair damage to an underground cable that carries telephone and data service for the company’s customers in the Charlottesville region. Technicians will work through the night to restore service and CenturyLink anticipates that service will be restored to all customers by Tuesday morning.

OVERNIGHT CLOSURES OF RIO RD. CROSSOVER CONTINUE

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Nighttime work to install anchors for the pilings that will support the bridge and retaining walls at the Rio Road grade-separated intersection will begin Jan. 26. The work, which will be done at night, uses a compressed air-driven hammer to drill the tie-back anchors into the soil behind the pilings.
